Let’s elaborate on the importance of showing love, acts of service and directing the curious to discover Jesus in their own way as an effective transformational tool among gospel resistant communities.
This is a core principle of Miraculous Movements, written by Jerry Trousdale, and a powerful key to the transformation happening among Muslim communities across Africa, the Middle East, and beyond – which would include the Basque Region of Spain.
1. Love as a Bridge, Not an Argument
In many Muslim/ Basque contexts, Christianity is viewed with deep suspicion or hostility—often due to history, politics, or cultural misunderstanding. Traditional approaches that involve debating doctrine or trying to “win” arguments often close doors rather than open them.
But what cannot be argued with is genuine love. When Muslims/ Basques encounter followers of Jesus who are compassionate, kind, and sacrificial, it challenges stereotypes and awakens curiosity. Love disarms. Love builds trust. It paves the way for deeper spiritual conversations.
In Miraculous Movements, Jerry Trousdale recounts story after story of Muslims who were resistant to evangelism—until they experienced unconditional love from a follower of Jesus. One man said, “I have never seen love like this before.” That love opened his heart to ask questions he never dared before.
2. Acts of Service Demonstrate the Kingdom
Jesus didn’t just preach the kingdom—He demonstrated it through healing, compassion, and service. In Muslim communities, especially rural or impoverished ones, acts of service are powerful because they meet practical needs while revealing the heart of God.
Examples from the book include:
- Helping build wells, houses, or schools
- Offering literacy training or medical care
- Praying for the sick and seeing healing
- Defending the vulnerable or rejected
Welcoming strangers with radical hospitality!
These actions break through cultural and spiritual barriers. They incarnate the love of Jesus and create space for questions like: “Why are you doing this?” or “Who is this Jesus you follow?”
3. Discovery Bible Study: Letting Them Hear God for Themselves
Instead of telling Muslims/ Basque what to believe, the DMM approach encourages them to discover God through Scripture themselves, especially through Discovery Bible Studies (DBS). This is revolutionary for several reasons:
- It removes the foreign teacher dynamic. They are reading the Bible in their language, in their own context.
- It puts the Holy Spirit in the driver’s seat. The facilitator asks questions like:
- What does this passage say about God?
- What does it say about people?
- What should I obey this week?
- What does this passage say about God?
- It empowers replication/multiplication. Anyone can lead a DBS, so as people encounter Jesus, they immediately begin inviting friends and family into the process.
In Miraculous Movements, entire communities have come to Christ because one person began a DBS in their home—often after seeing love and service modeled by a Christian.
Why It’s Effective
- It respects the Muslim’s/ Basque’s dignity, inviting them to seek truth—not shoving it on them.
- It models the way Jesus discipled—through relationship, story, and obedience, not coercion.
- It allows the Holy Spirit to do the convicting and revealing.
- It removes the missionary as the center and places Christ at the center.
- It protects against syncretism, because people obey Scripture, not just convert to a Western form of religion.
Summary:
Muslims are not coming to faith in Jesus because of arguments—they’re coming because they see the gospel lived out. Love, service, and discovery together create an environment where hearts are softened, and Jesus is encountered—not as a foreign prophet, but as Savior and Lord.
